2007
- Awarded a new 3-year $900,000
grant from the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services
Mentoring Children of Prisoners
Program. It will fund Friends
For Life Mentoring to make and
sustain at least 300 one-to-one
matches of caring adults with
children of incarcerated
parents!
2004
- Awarded a new 3-year $720,000
grant from the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services
Mentoring Children of Prisoners
Program. It was used to
establish Friends For Life
Mentoring and resulted in over
125 matches / over 150
volunteers trained / and a
network of over 10 faith-based
mentoring partners based
throughout a 7-county target
area.
2002
- Awarded a one-time
administrative grant from the GA
Department of Labor and
subsequently approved as a
permanent 10th unit of Project
Independence Older Blind Program
- which offers free or at a
reduced cost - eye exams,
talking watches, canes and
independent living training.
This project is operated by the
VISTAS CENTER.
2001
- Awarded a 2 - year $248,375
grant from the U.S. Department
of Commerce Technology
Opportunities Program. The grant
was used to establish the VISTAS
CENTER for the Blind and
Visually Impaired. Services now
include Braille Instruction,
Computer Training, Orientation
and Mobility, Independent
Living, and Microenterprise Training.
2000
- Collaborated with Creative
Visions Foundation, Inc. to
successfully obtain a 3- year
$395,000 grant from the U.S.
Department of Education to
establish
NETSPAN -
a Community Technology Centers
Program. Over 14
neighborhood-based Tech Centers
were established across a
network of churches, boys and
girls clubs, a Community Action
Agency, and community centers
through Athens-Clarke County,
GA. This formed an
infrastructure for launching
initiatives in Adult Literacy,
After-School Tutorials, Career
Development, and Microenterprise
Development.
